about this work

These are gouache paintings on black Somerset or BFK Rives paper. All plants are painted from life and are actual size, the paper size is either 9 x 12 inches or 22 x 30 inches. I am interested in not only what is visible. My interest in plants penetrates the surface, to what can be imagined or sensed. Walking in the woods we see dappled light fall onto leaves, there is a vibration to the greens we humans respond to. That vibration is in perhaps a wavelength of energy within the leaf that can be felt with our eyes. Each part of a green plant is a micro factory of photosynthesis. Those cells are one of the most amazing designs in nature, to capture energy and to store it in another living thing, that we then either consume, burn, heal or build with? Truly amazing. Of course, this is just a painting of a plant, a portrait, but this is what I choose to see, but also what I would like others to see as well.
